Introduction: The Call to Spiritual Leadership

Spiritual leadership is beyond titles or roles, it is about embodying your authenticity through balanced energy, grounded presence, and living your life as an example of what's possible for others to attain themselves. Each of us is born with a divine right to experience our world, to wake up and engage in awakening spiritually, and to accept the responsibility of awareness by creating a life of good - an expression of our inner beauty.

The key to leadership of any kind is the whole-hearted acceptance of responsibility.

In the mystery schools, we agree that spirituality is the "why" you worship / respect / embody God or Source. To be a spiritual leader means that you embrace your responsibility to develop, expand and maintain your relationship with the God of your understanding. No one else can do this for you. It is a deeply personal and profoundly important task, and each of us must undertake this for ourselves.

This means that each of us is tasked to be our own spiritual leader, and to live our lives as a living, breathing, serving example of spiritual leadership each and every day. A common misconception is to assume that we need to make huge splashes in the world to be perceived as a leader. When, in reality, it is the small, intentional actions you perform daily that bring this divine alignment into parenting, workplaces, communities, partnerships, marriages, etc., which inevitably makes the largest and longest-lasting impacts as a leader.

The greatest leaders in the world effectively embody their beliefs, and live in alignment with what they ask of others. As the saying goes, they walk their talk.

What Is Spiritual Leadership?

Spiritual leadership is the art of leading from your highest spiritual self, and not from the negative egoic self. It is rooted in integrity, service, openness, and an alignment of will. Choosing to be governed by a set of universal principles, like the Hermetic Laws, allows you a way to test your thinking and actions ensuring alignment and right action.

Being a spiritual leader in your own life does not mean that you are perfect. Quite the contrary. A good leader understands that they do the best they can until better can be done. Leadership is the willingness to stay curious, avoid absolutes, and to maintain awareness of the results born from implemented actions to prove whether a choice was good or not good.

As your own spiritual leader, your failures should be met with compassion and grace, instead of disgust and impatience. Your fears should be met with encouragement and love, instead of frustration and annoyance. How we lead ourselves will inevitably become the way that we lead others.

Why It Matters in Daily Life

We can all agree, our world needs more conscious, heart-led influence, not more fear, power and control. Spiritual leadership, then, is about making higher impacts through divine presence and consistency. All actions send out ripples into the collective energy of humanity, therefore with your conscious spiritual leadership you can create waves of healing, harmony, and unity. Positive energies overcome negative influence with ease.

In the next section you will find some easy and impactful ways that you can embody spiritual leadership, every day, in order to positively impact your life, and the world around you.

Ways Anyone Can Embody Spiritual Leadership

1. Set the Tone Energetically

Begin your day with grounding yourself and your intentions for the day.

  • Breathing deeply. Allowing your entire being to be present in this moment.

  • Asking your spirit guides and higher self to make themselves known throughout the day to aid you in navigating and taking correct action.

  • Set your day's intention. What are the day's tasks, where are you leaving space for God to work in and through you, and how can you best serve yourself and others.

  • For initiates, you can set your day's energy by completing your adept, 2nd step or ritual master rituals. If you are Kabbalist, you have additional rituals to support daily living.

  • Create inner alignment before engaging with others.

    • A tried-and-true way to do this is through meditation. When you meditate in your morning routine, you are setting the tone for the day while focusing on aligning your will to the universe and to source (God).

    • Giving yourself time in the morning to engage with your inner-self will yield amazing results throughout the day. Especially when you need to tackle difficult situations or a complicated workday schedule.

  • Fill your energy cup before giving or serving others.

    • Chi/Ki exercises are a perfect way to fill your cup. By cultivating life force energy you will have more in your "fuel tank" and you will cease ending your days in exhaustion or overwhelm.

  • Guided visualizations can also be a helpful way to start your day.

    • Simply visualize your body filling with white light, or life force energy, starting with your feet and moving upward until your whole body is filled.

    • Then, imagine this light spilling out and immersing your energy field outside and surrounding your body.

    • When you're done, you will be filled with light before your feet hit the floor.

2. Create Sacred Ceremonies in Ordinary Moments

One way to raise the frequency of mundane tasks is to bring a higher level of consciousness to the ordinary. This can easily be done by integrating ceremony and structure to the "how" and "why" of daily events.

Below are a few examples, consider what feels aligned for you in your daily life and add your creative flare to this list.

  • Light a candle before your meals, take a moment to speak, out-loud, your gratitudes and ask for divine guidance.

  • Regularly using salt baths or foot soaks at the end of your day to detoxify and release.

  • Burn sage to clear your energy or your space after days that are challenging to reset the energy of your mind and to bring light to your space.

  • If you've received a Life Activation, you were given specially-tuned sprays called Purificato and Crystallis. Continuing to use these sprays aids in setting the frequency for your day, and for your rest period. Additional sprays can be purchased from your Certified Life Activation Practitioner.

  • Encourage family, work teams, or social groups to spend time collectively intention-setting before group efforts. This brings a level of awareness and cohesiveness to any adventure.

3. Model Presence and Emotional Sovereignty

In the study of hermetics, we know that you cannot give what you do not have. This principle becomes obvious when you consider the role of leadership. A leader is someone who has earned merit through life experience, training, and mindset. And, is willing to impart this wisdom to others who ask for guidance.

  • Speak with mindfulness, not reactivity.

  • Own your energy: understand how you respond to stress, conflict, or success. Make adjustments where needed to harmonize to any of life's situations.

  • Teach kids or teams how to name and then manage emotions with deep compassion and understanding. However, a good leader does not base their decision-making on emotions, and understands that emotional reactions do not lead to truths, only subjectivity.

  • You are Not Perfect the Way You Are, by Dave Lanyon (Sovereign Ipsissimus in the Lineage of King Salomon), offers this wisdom as it applies to the limitations of emotions:

    • "Emotions are like sand. They drift and blow with the winds of thought, and if you base your clarity and understanding of life on emotions, you are in for a very rough ride because of their instability. (p. 45-46)"

4. Be a Guardian of Sacred Space

  • Your home, your team meetings, your family dinner—all can become temples of harmony when you treat them as such. When we choose to live our lives as though everything is sacred, we naturally elevate the energy of everything we participate in.

  • Maintain clean environmental energy with music, scent, order & cleanliness, and beauty. The more awareness we bring to our environment, the more the environment becomes a sacred space. I like to consider whether I would be proud to show my home or office to beings of a higher order.

  • Be in a constant state of asking yourself, "What does the energy of this space need right now?” Perhaps the energy feels stagnant. You can open the windows and perhaps turn on dance music and dance around to shift the energy into flow and vibrancy. Follow your intuition and take the appropriate action to adjust the energy of the space, when needed, will pay dividends in your feelings of rejuvenation, productivity, nervous system relaxation, and mental clarity.

  • A warrior does not allow anything to disturb the peace. Be a warrior for your sacred space. It is appropriate to set boundaries and uphold them with anyone who enters a space you've made sacred. This is as true for your bedroom as it is for the boardroom. When you hold a high standard for yourself and others, you create the opportunity for people to rise to meet your energy and intention.

5. Listen and Serve from the Heart

  • Real leadership listens deeply—to others and to Source.

    • In the mystery school, we call this alignment with discernment. Seeking the higher perspective, aligning to universal priciples, and bringing the God-quotent into decision-making & relationships is how we can ensure alignment.

  • Practice non-judgmental listening with your kids, partner, or coworkers.

    • A good leader is curious about people's motivations and actions, and seeks to understand. Leaping to conclusions, projecting or personalizing creates distance between you and others, and will never lead to unity and alignment.

  • Serve from overflow, not depletion—this is spiritual leadership in action.

    • Another way of conceptualizing this is to see yourself as a vessel (cup). All the things you do for yourself serve to fill your cup, things like self-care routines, exercise, healthy eating, education, prayer, joy, expression, laughter, rest, meditation and deep connection with a partner or friend.

    • Just like a vessel, as you pour in the things that enliven you, you will fill. Eventually, from your self-focus & rigorous dedication to alignment, you will overflow with energy, light, love and care.

    • It is from this overflow that we can selflessly & wisely serve others.
